Upgrades to the ZFS file system and virtualisation enhancements are key features of the latest release from the world’s most reliable, scalable and secure OS. The Solaris 10 5/09 release also features strong support for systems based on the Intel Xeon Processor 7400 Series.

As one of Australia’s foremost Solaris specialists, Frontline welcomes the upgrade.

“The latest release of Solaris 10 continues to build on the existing performance and resiliancy of this enterprise class operating system. New to update 7 is specifc tuning for Intel’s Xeon processors including their latest blazingly fast 5500 (Nehalem) series,” said Jon Spinks, Solutions Architect, Database Practice at Frontline.

“Working directly with Intel, Sun engineers have been able to provide the industry’s most effective operating system for these processors based on both performance and power utilisation. Additional ugrades to the Solaris container technology now make consolidation and virtualisation a more streamlined process thanks to tighter integration with ZFS.”

New features include:

  • Systems running Solaris 10 can now boot from the Solaris ZFS file system and can use ZFS as their root file system
  • Support for the latest systems from Sun and other vendors – including systems based on the Intel Xeon Processor 7400 Series – to deliver the highest x64 performance, energy efficiency and reliability available.

Virtualisation enhancements include:
